I haven’t downloaded the pics from my camera yet, but camp was a roaring success. One of the leaders brought a couple of propane heaters that took the chill off in the cabin nicely and everybody seemed to have appropriate sleeping gear, so no cold kids.

We did have two go home sick Saturday night, though. One with a fever. That’s no fun.

The wildlife was out and about as well:

  • A bear wandered through camp sometime Friday afternoon between the time setup crew arrived and when the kids came. Nobody actually saw it but it left some evidence along the lane.
  • There were some coyotes active both Friday and Saturday night. The howling was faint on Friday, and not everyone was able to hear them, but nobody had any trouble Saturday night. We gave a few howls and even managed to get an answer. :-)
  • A porcupine that was attempting to take up residence underneath one of the leaders’ cars was chased away Saturday afternoon. It climbed to the top of a nearby tree and stayed there until well after dinner.

Bridget even brought Cameron out with his Beaver colony for the day Saturday. They both have a much better idea of why I love it so much out there.

I had been thinking that it was going to be a bit weird at camp this time: Phil moved up to Scouts and Cameron’s in Beavers, so I was going without my own kid. It hit me on Saturday. In stead of going to camp with my kid and his pack, I went to camp with my other 20 kids. :-D

    Gordo, Join the Club!

My two boys are both now Venturers, yet I am still Mang the Cub leader. And lo, my daughter was invested as a Cub just last week :)

Now I do see the day coming when I might also move up. But I will always be Mang at least if only part time. Fortunately, having one of the less well known Jungle Book names means it won’t be recycled on me :)

I did join the club, Mang! I wear the shirt every Thursday! ;-)

When I joined, the standard names were all in use: Raksha, Akela, Hathi, Baloo, Chil & Bagheera. I’m a batty sort, so Mang was an easy one. Besides, there’s no way on earth I was going to hand Nag to my wife. LOL

I’m glad to hear you managed to stay warm. ;-)

When I joined as a leader we had Akela, Bagheera, and Chil. Our Baloo was on extended leave. Neither Kaa, Hathi, or Rikki-Tiki-Tava were up my alley. Nag was not on. Raksha would have been confusing to say the least. But being both interested in astronomy and a bit nocturnal by nature, Mang seemed a perfect fit :)

I went to help out for a fall camp and upon my return found there was a shirt my size waiting. :)

PORCUPINE?  You poor guy, I know you’re a bit ill now.  feel better Gord!

This was nice, Gord – it brought back some memories of a girl scout trip to the camp where we had to stay in the large cabin because of the weather.  They lit a nice fire and we all slept in our sleeping bags on the floor.
Sorry you’re feeling ill.  Feel better soon.
