I don’t ski. Quite frankly, it scares the crap out of me. Strapping two planks to my feet and hurtling down a mountain isn’t really my idea of fun and I have a less than sound knee from being talked into trying it out in high school.
Right off the scale of scary skiing is what’s known as “back-country”. Back-country skiers are the type that go just about anywhere for snow that hasn’t been touched by other skiers. Unfortunately for them, the areas that they frequent also tend to be avalanche-prone.
Witness Chris Cardello. He’s a backcountry skiier who was doing a shoot for a film company last April when he triggered a slide. His helmet-cam recorded the whole thing. He was only buried for five minutes, but that should be plenty for anyone.
The really good news is that he was also wearing an AvaLung, a breathing system designed for just this instance. Needless to say, Black Diamond is all over this video.
How very disturbing. That poor guy.. I hope he gave up that retarded, moronic, stupid, insane sport, like, that day. I feel kinda sick after watching that.
I don’t even need to watch the video to get the willies. ::shudder::
Yikes. That’s kinda scary. But the continuous whoo!’s upon being rescued are kinda cool.
NO WAY.
You could not pay me enough nowadays.
I downhill skied some as a kid. I never got hurt, but I think back on it now, and realize I must have been insane for agreeing to it.
